hi dave, i am recovering from rotator cuff surgery (i am not an athlete,so must be old age),so please excuse any typos from one handed typing. glad to hear your latest attempt to get away from it all. i can relate to your cold and windy story and ending up in a nice warm cafe. on my one and only real camping trip with my new hubby, we experienced LOTS of cold rainy weather in the parks of B.C.,Canada. the final straw for me was the HAIL, we got in Banff in late June, right after we pitched our tent. we gave up for one night and dried out everything in a motel room. yay, warm bed at last....but i still remember the beautiful glaciers and lakes so it was still worth it.. hope you are doing well. will you be into training again? take care. We hope to be there again next year. From: Michelle Posted: 5/7/2008 10:33:14 AM

Well, I tell them that after I get it the first time, of course! I don't always;(...I must be honest. Next time, tell them you are a hard stick and just get the anethesiologist! Anyway, sorry you went through all that IV torture. swimmomx,
I work for Aquatic Design Group, the largest aquatic architecture and engineering firm on the West Coast. We have had several conversations over the years with administration there to design a pool (and some hot and cold plunges) for the Olympic Training Center in Cbula Vista. The lack of a pool there is not from a desire by the administration, but (to my understanding) overall politics and funding from the USOC.
Hopefully someday we'll see a great facility in Chula Vista! From: swimmomx Posted: 4/23/2008 11:57:51 AM
Hi from Chula Vista, where we have an Olympic Training Center without a pool. Wouldn't it be great to have a facility out here for Olympians and aspiring Olympians? Maybe down the line you can help us with that?????

We live near the OTC and hope you will take us up on a victory dinner sometime. Cheers!!! From: Smare Posted: 4/6/2008 11:04:29 PM
Dave, it was so awesome to be there with you and be a part of this. Timmy definately reached new volumes that I wasn't formerly aware of....thanks.
To everyone else: Being at the paralympics reinforced a valuable lesson that I had already learned from being Dave's sister, but was magnified by watching all of these incredible athletes strive and succeed. Simply, "disability" and "ability" is a thing of perspective. Anybody can pursue and achieve success, it's all a matter of attitude. Or, as Timmy put it: "Mommy, there were people there where Uncle Dave swam that didn't have arms or legs, or didn't have an arm AND a leg...but Uncle Dave, he doesn't have any hair"
Where does THAT classify you?!? Love you, and, again, congratulations. Karyn From: sterkel's Posted: 4/6/2008 10:40:48 PM

What a thought provoking post to read nice and early on an Easter morning. Makes you really appreciate what you have. Happy Easter! Also, enjoyed the article in Splash! From: swimmomx Posted: 3/22/2008 9:41:51 PM
Just thinking about the lady's question. Maybe she meant something more along the lines of,"What are you up against?" It seems to be getting more and more difficult to phrase things in ways that are acceptable. She clearly saw that you were working toward something and I think, wanted to encourage you. As do many of us out here. Your clear thinking and hard work will take you far, and I didn't get that from a fortune cookie. From: The MOM Posted: 3/22/2008 2:46:03 PM
Very thoughtful. Interesting how various people cross our paths - while this woman might have caused you to lose sleep, she had the courage to risk getting rebuffed by you. She reached out and entered your circle and as a result you wrote a very thought provoking article. You are such a great writer! See you tomorrow. Happy Easter. From: Kevin's Mom Posted: 3/21/2008 10:39:26 PM
Hi Dave, I read your latest journal entry just now. It gives us a lot to think about, especially the part about "being a victim" What you say is true, sometimes there are real victims, but often they don't act like it. Others spend more time in their problems than being grateful for what they have. To me, you are definitely NOT a victim, but a person who, despite challenges, continues to live his life in the best way he can. As alway, good wishes come your way and hopes that you continue to do well. From: Duncan Posted: 3/19/2008 12:23:04 PM

What a great article in Splash magazine! This is only the second issue I have gotten and I was ecstatic to see a two-page article on you! It's always nice to see something about you in print rather than on the internet, and I am sure that I'll see more of that with the upcoming swimming events that you'll be participating in. Jimi Flowers is a smart man to convince you to get back into the pool. I've been secretly hoping that would happen! As always, you are a true inspiration and I can't wait to hear and see more of you in the upcoming months. I'll be traveling to Perth, Australia, in April for the 2008 Fina Masters World Championships and I'll be wearing a little white ankle bracelet that you might be somewhat familiar with! :) Good luck in your training, Dave! I can't wait to see what you do next!
P.S. Awesome that you traveled to Grand Rapids, MI! I am from a little town called South Haven, which is about 45 minutes south of GR. I've actually heard of the RAYS and am very happy to hear that you went there to support them in their quest to help raise money for you. I bet all the swimmers loved to see you there! Hi Dave, Well, sounds like you have had a pretty hairy month! I actually tried to read every word and found it pretty challenging! I did notice you on the college swimming website message board occasionally. I think some of the posters have nothing better to do than to complain and make judgments about certain institutions and people. I tried to respond but I guess you have to have a password, so I decided that I was equally crazy to even read this stuff and take it seriously. I would much rather write to you and send good wishes your way. So I hope all is well with you and that your training (and other activities) are what you want. Take care.

Hi Dave, thanks for posting so we can stay in touch with your going's on. Hey, that backstroke sounds like fun. It is always good to try something new anyway , right? I have a coworker friend whose nephew was involved in a car accident before Christmas. He has spinal cord injury and is only a teenager. But he has a good attitude and I just found out that, in Oregon, where he lives, he has just started in a program with Project Walk. He had gone to Carlsbad first, and is happy that there is now a facility up there. They like their philosophy and I told them some of your great accomplishments with them also. It is a small world....... Continued success in all your endeavors, Dave... From: The MOM Posted: 2/5/2008 6:04:09 PM

After watching your video for about the 20th time, I see new stuff all the time and trying to figure things out. Looks like 8 lanes have swimmers and you outswim most of them even though you are the only one starting in the water. Are all 7 lanes your competition or just those beside you? It will be real interesting learning the new rules of the game. You looked awesome! Can't wait for you and Jerrica to join us for Christmas. From: Daves Grandma Posted: 12/21/2007 10:40:30 AM

Good luck! Wish we could be there...by the way, I find it interesting that many of the things that Glenn mentioned that leads a swimmer to the olympics Dave didn't have on his side: He didn't grow up in a popular swimming community, and didn't have the opportunity to swim with great competition as a young athlete. If you don't know his story, you should look into it sometime, its pretty amazing, about an amazing person. The thing he does have on his side is the mental fortitude to match his physical talent, and I think the last couple of years has proven that David's personality actually surpasses him physically. That's what makes him as great as he is, and he's only becoming more impressive. Way to go Dave, we love you. http://www.goswim.tv/articles_comments.php?id=4959_0_16_0_C From: James Mc Posted: 11/27/2007 2:24:38 PM

He makes a great egg McCheese - a Denniston invention because there isn't one on the McDonald's menu - and he BBQ's quite a lot - so maybe he'll cook up something for you. I'd place my bet on Jerrica though. Thanks for your kind gracious words about our Rockies. I thought they'd go into the series rested but I think they lost their edge. It was painful. But we love them anyway and the Sox did play very well. I was kind of hoping they'd throw at least one game - but maybe you get in trouble for doing that. Happy Thanksgiving - May God bless you all! From: Jerrica's Mom Posted: 11/13/2007 1:56:25 PM
Just a note to say that those of us who just stopped celebrating the Red Sox win (oops - Pedroia just won Rookie of the Year - here we go again...) very seriously were pulling for the Rockies for the last 2 games of the Series - you guys have a great team, and they deserved better than to be swept, even by the best freaking baseball team the world has ever known. So know that all of the fans here in the East respect your achievements!! And to those of you who are in Southern California, our prayers have been with you as you begin to recover from last month's devestation... but my main reason for posting is to ask Dave to do the cooking for the next week or so, if you wouldn't mind - because when you two get here for your visit next week, we plan on having Jerrica cook up a storm!!! We can't wait to see you guys... and Dave's Mom, I hope to meet you sometime soon, too!
P.S. Only kidding about that cooking up a storm thing... we just want her to cook up a mini-maelstrom, maybe... like one really good batch of burritos. Or some pie. From: Alexis from Colorado Athletic Club Posted: 11/12/2007 2:46:42 PM

Most of you know, or should know about the chaos we have here in So. Ca. It is crazy. Words cannot explain the devastation! I hope Justins home was spared. Dave, You've been a swimmer this long and you don't know how to get water out of your ear?!? Drop in a few drops of rubbing alcohol, let it seep in, then tip your head back the other way and let it drain out -- works like a charm.
glad to hear you are working towards international competition again, that's exciting stuff! best of luck in everything, and hope the water in the ear tip helps!

Six months between posts is BS my man, but you will accept my apology because I am neumsie. Really glad to hear that the move went smoothly and that you're with your family.
It continues to amaze me that your spirit never waivers. It is your defining characteristic and makes those of us in the Auburn Family and beyond so very proud to call you a friend. I wish you continued success my boy!
Now on another note, it was a close call in the cathedral on Saturday night. I'm not sure the boys were fully conscience for the first 3 quarters, but hopefully Tubs can get them ready for the Bulls in time for kickoff this weekend. Oh, how I wish the Reverend Craig could come back to lead the Tigers, but alas, as it was with us, all great things eventually graduate... except Ciarla

Davo- If people were impressed by that, they should see you doing Wii Golf (not to mention flutter kicking a certain someone in the face after a spill on the slalom course in the streets of downtown Carlsbad).
You looked awesome man, much better than last time i was there (before your NCAA award).
Oh yeah, don't move, you know last year the only Auburn losses were when you weren't there for War Eagle Saturdays. You are essentially dooming the entire Auburn football team, and Auburn Nation to a 0-for season because you want to do what's best for you. Think about the bigger picture Dave. Think about our needs.
See you soon.

Hehem, it's a failing. There have been times his parents have learned about big things in Davo's life from his journal. This change has been a huge step and various aspects needed to fall into place. Davo's dad and I are excited to have him closer to his old stomping grounds - (We think!) He hasn't lived near us since he graduated from high school, 10 years ago. We hope we can get along - we are still about 3 hours away so we have a buffer zone. From: CHRISTY Posted: 8/3/2007 12:36:14 AM

Forgot to mention that, in addition to being able to view the "Stories of Character" on SECsports.com, each of them will be told via radio broadcasts (with CBS Sports' Verne Lundquist narrating) during SEC sporting events throughout the year. From: Susan Storey Posted: 8/2/2007 9:14:33 AM
In case you haven't heard, Dave was selected as one of Auburn's "Stories of Character" for the SEC's 75th anniversary campaign. The SEC chose 75 former student-athletes (six from each school and one each from Georgia Tech, Sewanee and Tulane, original members of the conference) who have gone on to make an impact in their communities and beyond following their collegiate careers. Besides Dave, the AU contingent consistent of Ruthie Bolton, Kirsty Coventry, Ed Dyas, Fob James and Jim Voss. So let's congratulate Dave on another well-deserved honor!
P.S. I am a former AU media relations student assistant who worked with the swim team. I also had the privilege of working on the SEC's 75th anniversary campaign ... and Dave's story. From: Carri Jo Robertson/Shreveport, LA Posted: 7/31/2007 10:33:02 AM

Dave attended a few swim meets yesterday getting the word out about the event. It looks like he did a good job as it seemed like more people are attending now.... I think its going to be B I G!

Christy has done a phenomenal job getting people to donate items for the Relays. One of those companies is TYR. They are a swimwear company that donated bags, suits, warm-ups as raffle items. I know this may look like a conflict since Nike has been and still is so good to me, but really I think it shows how many people want to help a great cause in my name. Don't worry, Nike will be donating some nice items as well!! Not to mention the other 20 or so organizations that Christy has gotten involved. She's Wonderwoman I tell ya! The DDR site and event is going to be pretty special. When else are kids going to see, swim with, and talk to so many Olympians and record holders at the same time? Great job, coordinator person!! Thanks!
I'm now suspicious that a lot of the Davo chores growing up were also 'timed events'. Like the grass mowed with mohawk strips everywhere, but done in record time. Or snow shoveled with one footpath down the driveway, and one shovel width on the sidewalks, but done before you knew it. I finally understand.........Great story Amazing Man! http://www.time.com/time/magazine/article/0,9171,1612709,00.html Entitled "Walking Away from Paralysis". Interesting article even if brief. I think PW does some of this - maybe more is needed. As stated in the article - the youngest seem to show the most improvement. Also the little guy in the article is still within in the typical 2 year recovery period. Some might say that he was going to get better anyway. However, stimulation seems to always be a plus. From: swimmomx Posted: 4/22/2007 5:30:43 PM

Thanks to all of you who whined, and thank you, Dave, for deleting the picture. It has been a long time since we've visited you. I was trying to decide how I could quickly move past the said picture when we were once again visiting while in school. Haley- I concur, naked is good. Dave- Good seeing you again over the weekend. It's great to see you feeling better. Don't worry about going to jail, you're a sympathetic witness, the jury will hang for sure. Hawke- You're a legend mate, in and out of the water. Keep the torch going in the Plains. Squatto- I'm pretty sure the reason your relay record was broken was because you were so tired from running around looking for Tex before the race. David- You are a legend and a truly one of the great coaches of all time. Thanks for imparting your knowledge and class on so many great men and women over the years. We're all rooting for you in your new endeavor. Auburn men and women- Congrats for one of the most impressive two weeks in the history of sports. Carry yourself with the pride that comes with it.

Did you ever get your cheeseburger? We found a good spot ..Burger and Brew in Solana Beach... From: Wally Posted: 3/23/2007 7:57:52 PM
Your adoring public will be back soon when news gets out you're writing funny stuff. Been watching the counter, and it's picked up 3000 hits since Surgery Day. Maybe the 'Post' button ought to say 'Post and Win a Prize' or something. Cleaned out the garage and shuffled Wally stuff from one side to the other again. Then went to the covered wagon and shuffled Davo stuff the same way. Stuff likes being shuffled. So glad to hear the staples are out and movement is freer! BTW that's one of my screwdrivers you took the pic of, huh? Didn't think I'd notice..... Wally From: The MOM Posted: 3/23/2007 6:32:39 PM
Dr. Batzdorf is a funny man - getting a screw driver reminded me of the time when you were 10 or 11 and a doctor (who also got his degree about 1955 ) told you those tonsils needed to come out. He left the room adruptly and you looked at me with big eyes and asked, "Is going to get the pliers?" Or maybe I told you he was going to get the pliers. Funny doctors. Glad the staples are out and your limitations are less. From: Hutch Posted: 3/20/2007 11:28:05 PM
Glad things are moving along Dave. Auburn is always thinking of ya. I love seeing Ciarla, you and hawkie talking about the current team. THey did ausome. You all see how we old folks felt when you all were winning championships. It is lame not racing, but if your team is the best in the country, it makes it a little better. Great job Hawk and coaching staff. Way to go Marsh Madness. Hutch From: Ciarla Posted: 3/20/2007 5:59:36 PM
Squatto, you lost the record because of the 3 second pause in your stroke...just kidding man, Davo hope all is well. Hawke man, i love your comments..haha From: Hawkie Posted: 3/19/2007 3:11:42 PM
For all the guys who actually LOVE the Auburn swim team, just know that our men and women fought and won two of the best NCAA Championships I have ever witnessed, and they did it with honor and respect for the people who have come before them!
From: Hawkie Posted: 3/19/2007 10:25:20 AM
Davo,
Thanks for talking to the team the other day mate, they really respect anything that comes out of your mouth because you are a legend of Auburn swimming. You need to get into coaching! Come on down, I hear Richard is hiring! From: Jeff Posted: 3/16/2007 11:49:24 PM
It was nice having the record while it lasted. I still have the world's fastest split for the backstroke with a 2.4 second delay between each stroke! horay for me. It's probably Tex's fault why we lost it, don't ya think? From: Eric & Jess Posted: 3/16/2007 2:58:00 AM
Hey Stud!
Glad to hear the surgery went well and that you are on the road to recovery! We were at Rodneys house for Thanksgiving and he asked about how you were doing and how your motivational speeches were going. I was going to send you a picture from there but the tires on the roof of his double-wide trailer killed the reception of my wireless conection. Anywho...the AHS 10yr reunion is the weekend of July 20th...try to keep that date open. Stay well and we will talk soon!

Now thats funny....Speedos ;) I was thinking you can kill 2 birds with one stone..... 1. Have "J" walk over and help reposition that old man with a nice fluffy pillow and maybe he will come to enjoy "sleeping" face down Then the room temp wont really matter much 2. Maybe then this will get rid of that horrible loud old nurse that was talking so darn loud that no one could hear themself think let alone listen to poor kyle try and read your card..... It was great seeing you yesterday, I finally realized why kyle was in rare form, when we left your room he started jumping up and down "I am soooo excited I got to see Dave" lol, Sheesh I think he was so overwhelmed he didnt know how to act! Genetics.... Sorry we couldnt have stayed longer but he was making me so nervous, I thought he was going to bump into your bed and no matter how many times you pushed that morphine pump button I think you would have come unglued!!! Time to Exit stage right :) Anyways I hope you get out of that POS hospital tomorrow....You look great and hopefully everything will come together in the recovery stage & feeling will start returning! Everyone luv's ya & it pulling for you!!! Hang tight it will all be over soon!! SEND IT FORWARD From: MOM Posted: 3/10/2007 7:06:19 PM

Wishing you a fast recovery! Can't wait to hear hospital tales and your feedback on NCAAs (oh and worlds)... From: Kyle Bode Posted: 3/8/2007 11:30:08 PM
Hi Dave, I hope Lauren doesnt read what you wrote the other day! I think you are going to be in BIG trouble for saying I kicked her butt....Bad Word Dave....I think she was easy to race. I hope your surgery went well and I am glad you can feel cold. See you soon! Love Kyle From: Holly at Texas A&M Posted: 3/8/2007 9:55:55 PM
Woohoo! Glad to hear that you can feel the cold water when you stick your fingers in it. Reminds me of the slumber party game when you stick the first person asleep's fingers in warm water and make them pee. (Could be fun if you catch a nurse napping on shift.) Keep up the progress! Dave, REST! RECOVER! Looking forward to seeing you sometime soon. Keep your chin up! From: Toni Posted: 3/8/2007 9:33:16 PM
Hi Dave. Hope you keep feeling better and better. And more and more. Women's NCAAs are fast, the relays especially. SMU managed to sneak into 16th place in both this morning's relays so we're happy the luck was flowing our way. I'm not there though, I'm finding out either by phone or by the website which is live but seems to discriminate against the 500 and the 200 IM by not showing those results. Grr. We sent you cookies, they should get to your room by Monday so work on your appetite. You don't want to miss out on these, kindergarten artistic decorations and all. Wishing you well, Toni From: YOTA swimmer Posted: 3/8/2007 9:03:57 PM

Hello, Dave! Just wanted you to know I stopped by your site. You would not believe how many times we pass that high school where we met you (E. Lyme, CT) and heard your inspiring message for the swim team. We do a lot of work in that area. I also wanted you to know you are in our thoughts and prayers!! From: Alison Posted: 3/8/2007 2:24:45 PM

Way to go, good to hear news. Hope the recovery is swift and realatively painless. No that isn't always possible with surgery. Things are great here. Sun is shining and could not have asked for a more perfect week. Thanks for helping order it in. God Bless Dave. Hope to see you again soon. Lots of Love From: SVA Marlins Posted: 3/7/2007 6:59:11 PM
